Experience One : Tree Medicine Plant Walk

This Experience is an outdoor plant walk led by a Métis knowledge keeper. Along the trail students explore human-plant relationships that support Métis communities in past and present. Introducing plants of cultural significance, we’ll inspect them closely to learn about their role in the local ecosystem. Discussion of uses for food, medicine, and tools follows, integrating exploration of Indigenous relationships with nature, traditions around harvesting and environmental stewardship, as well as plant safety. Please note that location and season will influence types of plants available. Knowledge keepers often share their own individual knowledge and stories, which keeps this experience fresh.

Experience Two : Métis Artifacts Scavenger Hunt

Working in small groups, students use trading supply cards to locate items used by Métis on the Canadian prairies. Once found, we gather as a large group to experience the artifacts first-hand. Student engage all their senses by interacting with the artifacts, which are chosen to promote interest and tactile learning: a rough-grained deer hide, pemmican that smells of smoke and berries, or wearable capote jacket. Students will gain a hands-on understanding of traditional Métis food, tools, and clothing, and how they help the Metis survive long journeys on the prairies.
